Photographs show Axion RGB+W on a customer build. The number of lights fitted to that vehicle is not documented, so we do not state one.

The difference

Why the +W matters

An RGB light makes white by running red, green and blue together and hoping the mix lands somewhere near it. Axion carries a dedicated white channel as well, so white is a colour the light actually has rather than one it approximates.

Cree RGBW emitters

Each Axion carries high-power Cree RGBW packages — red, green and blue, plus a white die of its own in the same package.

One controller, one chain

Run a wire to the first light, then light to light from there. The whole chain answers to a single RGB+W Bluetooth controller.

Built to be opened

CNC-milled housing, potted face. If one ever quits it comes back here and we repair it rather than replacing it — serviceable, not disposable.

This is our board

Rhino-designed electronics running Rhino firmware, programmed, potted and tested in North Carolina. If the silkscreen reads RHINO AXION RGBW, we drew it.

The LED packages are Cree parts, bought in like everyone buys silicon in. What is ours is the board they sit on, the firmware that drives them, the housing they live in and the bench they are tested on.

Axion is sold as a 20 W light. Here is what it drew and what it read on our bench, with each figure labelled by how it was obtained.

Illuminance was read at 13 in from the assembled light. That is repeatable, but it is not comparable with figures published at one metre, and it cannot honestly be converted into one. Linked, not looming

One run reaches the first light; each light feeds the next from there. That is fewer wires back to the controller than a home-run-per-light system, and it is why adding lights later does not mean rewiring what is already fitted.

Plan it before you buy

Mounting points, wire routing and what hardware a particular vehicle needs vary far too much for a diagram to settle. Send us the build and we will go through it with you before you order.

Supported by the team that builds it

The Axion housing is potted, so it is not a light you open on the trail. If one fails, it comes back here and the people who assembled it repair it.

Questions worth asking

Which kit size should I choose?

Start from what you want lit rather than from a number. Four lights cover the four wheel wells. Eight adds a light at the nose and one at the tail and doubles up the front wells. Twelve doubles every well and puts a light on each belly rail to close the dark gap between the axles.

The diagram in the builder shows exactly where each one lands as you change the count. Treat it as typical placement — the right answer for a specific vehicle depends on where there is somewhere to mount.

What comes in the kit?

The builder lists it exactly, and it updates with your selection: the Axion lights, one RGB+W controller, an extension cable for every light, the power-injection points the system needs, splitters and mounting hardware.

Extensions come in 6-foot and 12-foot lengths and we set the mixture to suit your layout, so the builder tells you how many you are getting rather than pretending every light takes the same cable. Splitters and mounting hardware are matched to the vehicle for the same reason.

Vehicle-specific brackets, fuses, switches and tools are not part of a kit. Tell us what you are fitting and we will confirm what else the job needs before you order.

Can I add more lights later?

Yes — that is what the linkable design is for. Lights link one to the next along a run, so extending a run does not mean rewiring the lights already fitted. A growing system needs power injected every three lights, so tell us how far you are taking it and we will make sure the injection points and cable lengths come with it. You already have the controller.

Does Axion really produce white, or is it mixed?

Really produces it. The Cree RGBW emitters in an Axion each carry a dedicated white die alongside the red, green and blue. That is the difference between RGB and RGB+W, and it is the reason the white in the photographs above looks like white rather than like a pale mix.

Can I run Diamond RGB and Axion RGB+W together?

Not on the same lighting system. Diamond uses RGB architecture and Axion uses RGB+W. They are different lighting architectures, so they cannot share one configured system.

A vehicle can absolutely run both product families — plenty do — but they are built as two separate systems with their own controllers. Adding Diamond lights into an Axion run is not something that works, and we would rather tell you that here than after you have bought the parts.

How big can an Axion system get?

Bigger than this builder configures on its own. Axion systems grow by linking lights into runs along the vehicle — one down the driver side, one down the passenger side, and a centre run when a build needs one — with power injected as the system grows. There is no published cap on how many lights that supports.

This builder lays the system out for you through 24 lights — that is as far as the placement diagram stays readable, and as far as we can size the runs and injection points without talking to you first. It is a limit of the page, not of the hardware. Past that, tell us about the build and we will map the runs, the injection points and the placement with you rather than guessing at a parts list.

How is the power wired?

Not as one long chain with everything drawing through the controller. The lights link into runs along the vehicle, and power is injected into the system every three lights as it grows. The controller is what the whole system takes its instructions from; it is not a funnel every light’s current passes through.

What happens if one fails?

It comes back to us and we repair it. Because we designed the board and assembled the light, we can open it on the bench — the housing is potted, so this is workshop work rather than something to attempt on the trail.
